Volume jumps: catch the one run to watch

For All Coaches

The session to watch isn’t a big week

The largest running-injury study yet followed thousands of runners. The ones who got hurt usually hadn’t had a big week. They had done one run well past their recent longest: runs just 10–30% past it came with about 60% more overuse injuries. Weekly mileage changes did not predict injury. Read the research.

Smagpie now watches for that session. We call it a volume jump.

On Coach Hub, the day it happens

A run (by distance) or ride (by moving time) more than your team’s limit past the athlete’s longest of that sport in the last 30 days gets an amber marker on Coach Hub. Hover or tap it for the numbers. A Volume jumps chip above the list counts them and filters to just those athletes.

You also get one push when the session comes in. It’s on by default; to turn it off, open Notifications, tap ⚙ Settings and switch off the Volume Jumps row.

On the workout, the whole story

Open the workout and a Volume jump +22% (distance) pill sits with the other results. Below it, the Long-Run Ceiling (or Long-Ride Ceiling) chart shows every run or ride from the last 30 days, the athlete’s longest, and where your limit sits.

Before you assign it

The warning comes before the run, too. On Team Schedule, a run or ride card shows how many athletes it would push past their limit. Open the badge to see who, their recent longest and how far over it is. In Add Assignment, a strip under the date lists the same athletes once you pick the workout, date and athletes. You can still save it; you just know first.

Planned sessions count. If Saturday’s long run is on the schedule, it raises the bar for Tuesday’s run after it.

Your limits, your call

Team Settings › Compliance has a Running and a Cycling section, shown for the sports your team has on:

  • Jump limit: 12% for runs and 25% for rides to start. Rides are measured in time, so a trainer ride counts the same as the road.
  • Days needed: an athlete needs a few days of that sport in the last 30 before there’s a ceiling. Until then they show a grey building a base marker instead of a warning.
  • Athletes see it: off to start, so only coaches see volume jumps. Switch it on to show athletes on their own workouts.

How this helps your coaching

  • For coaches:

See volume jumps on Coach Hub and in a push the day they happen, and on Team Schedule and Add Assignment before you schedule one.

  • For athletes:

If your coach switches it on, a workout that was a volume jump shows it, with a chart of your recent longest sessions.
