How do I refer another coach to Smagpie? #

  • Coach

Open Team Settings → Referrals, click Copy link and send the link to the coach you’re referring. When they create their team with it, their team gets a free Athlete Pass and the referral counts for your team.

  1. Open Team Settings → Referrals. Your link is at the top, under Your referral link. It looks like app.smagpie.com/users/register?ref=CODE.
  2. Click Copy link and paste it into a text or an email. Or click Share to send it from your phone’s share menu, with a short note that says their team gets a free Athlete Pass and your team earns free passes as theirs grows.

Your team’s code is shown under the link as Your Referral Code, if you’d rather read it out.

What to tell the other coach

  • Open the link and create your team. The link opens the sign-up page with Create Organization already chosen and the code filled in under Referral code (optional). The page shows “Referred by” and your team’s name, so they know it worked.
  • Or type the code. On app.smagpie.com/users/register, choose Create Organization and type the code into Referral code (optional). See How do I sign up as a coach?
  • Forgot to enter it? They can still add it within 30 days of creating their team, as long as they haven’t bought any passes yet. See I forgot to enter a referral code.

A referral is for a coach creating a new team. It isn’t how athletes or assistant coaches join your own team; for that, see How do I invite athletes to my team? A team can’t use its own code.

The program in short

Share your referral link. A coach who creates their team with it gets a free Athlete Pass. Once their team has 5 paid athletes, your team earns 2 free Athlete Passes — then 1 more for every 10 after that, for their team’s first 24 months. Passes your team earns are never taken back.

What does a new team get when its coach signs up with a referral link? #

  • Coach
  • Parent

A team created with a referral code gets one free Athlete Pass, added to its pool as soon as the team is created. The coach gives it to any athlete on the team, the same way as a pass they bought.

  • The pass waits in the pool until the coach gives it. To give it, open Athletes and choose Give a pass on the athlete’s row. See What is an Athlete Pass?
  • Coach accounts are free either way, and passes cost the same. The team that referred you sees your team’s name, when it joined, and how many passes have been bought on it, so it can follow its rewards.
  • The head coach of the team that referred the new team gets a notification when it signs up with their code.

Parents: if your child’s coach signed up with a referral link, the coach decides which athlete gets the free pass.

What does my team earn for a referral, and when? #

  • Coach

Once the referred team has 5 paid athletes, your team earns 2 free Athlete Passes, then 1 more for every 10 after that, for the referred team’s first 24 months. Passes your team earns are never taken back.

What that looks like for one referred team

  • Fewer than 5 paid athletes: no passes yet.
  • 5 paid athletes: your team earns 2 free Athlete Passes.
  • 15 paid athletes: 1 more, so 3 in all.
  • 25 paid athletes: 1 more, so 4 in all.
  • 35 and beyond: 1 more at every further 10.
  • After the referred team’s first 24 months: passes bought on it no longer earn your team anything, and the passes it already earned your team stay in your pool.

The details

  • Paid athletes means every Athlete Pass bought on the referred team, whether the coach bought passes for the team or an athlete bought their own. It counts passes bought, not distinct athletes: 5 passes in one bulk order count as 5, even before they’re given out. The referred team’s own free welcome pass doesn’t count, and a refund never takes earned passes back.
  • The first 24 months. Only passes bought in the referred team’s first 24 months count, starting from the day the team was created. Passes your team earned in that time are never taken back. That’s long enough for a growing team to earn your team plenty of passes; to keep earning after that, refer another coach.
  • Each team you refer counts on its own. Refer three coaches and each of their teams earns your team passes on this schedule, each for its own first 24 months.
  • Where the passes go. Earned passes land in your team’s pool, ready to give to an athlete who needs one. The Referrals panel shows Referral passes earned, and for each referred team its Paid athletes (bought in its first 24 months), Passes earned, Earns passes through (the last day its purchases count) and the count at which the next pass comes in. On License Management they’re counted in Free Earned.
  • Your team’s head coach gets a notification each time your team earns passes.

This is separate from the passes your team earns from its own purchases. See What is an Athlete Pass?

I forgot to enter a referral code when I signed up. Can I still add it? #

  • Coach

Yes, you can add it once. Open Team Settings → Referrals and enter the code under Were you referred?, then click Apply. Your team gets the same free Athlete Pass it would have got at sign-up.

The Were you referred? card is there only while all of these are true:

  • your team was created less than 30 days ago,
  • your team hasn’t bought any passes yet, and no athlete has bought one on your team,
  • your team hasn’t entered a referral code before.

Once your team buys its first pass, a referral code can no longer be added, and a code can’t be changed once it’s entered. You can’t enter your own team’s code.

Can I get paid for referrals? #

  • Coach

No. Referral rewards are always free Athlete Passes for your team.

The passes go into your team’s pool, and you give them to athletes on your team. See What does my team earn for a referral, and when?

Can athletes or parents share our team's referral code? #

  • Coach
  • Athlete
  • Parent

The code isn’t secret, so anyone can pass it on. Rewards only ever go into a team’s pool of Athlete Passes, and nothing goes to the athlete or parent who shared it.

  • A referral counts only when a coach creates a new team with the code.
  • Any passes it earns go to the team whose code it is, and the coach decides which athletes get them.
  • Athletes don’t have a referral link of their own, and there’s nothing to sign up for.
