What is the Session Tracker and how do I open it? #

  • Athlete
  • Coach

The Session Tracker is Smagpie’s phone app for strength and mobility workouts. Open track.smagpie.com in your phone’s browser and log in with the same email and password you use for Smagpie.

Put it on your home screen

The Session Tracker is a web app, so there’s nothing to download from an app store. To open it like an app:

  • iPhone (Safari): tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android (Chrome): tap the menu, then Install app or Add to Home screen.

The first time you log in, you’re asked to accept the licence agreement. If your account uses two-step sign-in, you’ll also be asked for the code from your authenticator app.

What it’s for

Runs, rides and swims come in from your watch. Use the Session Tracker for the gym: lifting, circuits and mobility work. Your coach sees each set you log in Smagpie.

How do I start my strength workout? #

  • Athlete

When you open the Session Tracker, Today’s Workout shows the strength and mobility workouts your coach assigned for today. Tap Start Session on the one you’re doing.

  • If you already started it, the button reads Resume Session.
  • If you’ve finished it, it shows Completed.
  • Runs, rides and swims aren’t listed. Those come from your watch.

No workout assigned today?

Tap Start Ad-hoc Session and choose:

  • Follow a workout plan: pick one of your team’s workouts and tap Start Session.
  • Build as you go: search for exercises, tap Add to session for each one, then tap Start Session.

Only today’s workouts are listed. You can’t log a session for an earlier day.

Why don't I see a Start Session button? #

  • Athlete
  • Parent
  • Coach

Logging a session needs an Athlete Pass. Without one you can still log in, see today’s workouts and look through your Session History. The Start Session, Resume Session and Start Ad-hoc Session buttons don’t appear, and neither do the RPE and feel ratings.

If you think you should have a pass, ask your coach. Coaches can log their own sessions too.

How do I log a set? #

  • Athlete

Each exercise card shows the set you’re on (“Set 2 of 4”) with Weight and Reps chips already filled in. Tap a chip to change it on the number pad, then tap SAVE SET.

  • The numbers start from your coach’s prescription, or from what you did on your last set. Often you only need to tap SAVE SET.
  • Some exercises log differently. A timed exercise, such as a plank, logs a duration. Bodyweight exercises show BW and only ask for reps.
  • If your coach prescribed an effort (RPE), the chip shows it as a target. The Session Tracker doesn’t ask for an RPE for each set. You rate the whole session when you finish.
  • Last time under the exercise name shows what you lifted the last time you did it.
  • If you lift less than prescribed, a small ↓ marker appears next to Weight, so your coach can see you adjusted it.

After you save, the set shows as a chip (for example “135 lbs × 8”) and the rest timer starts.

I logged the wrong weight or reps. How do I fix it? #

  • Athlete

Tap the set’s chip on the exercise card, or tap Fix on the rest timer straight after saving. The number pad opens as Editing set 2 and shows what you saved. Correct it and tap UPDATE SET.

  • Timed sets can’t be edited.
  • You can’t delete a single set. If the whole session went wrong, tap Finish, then Discard session. That deletes the session and every set in it, so only use it to start over.
  • Already finished? See I finished but forgot to log a set.

How does the rest timer work? #

  • Athlete

After you save a set, a rest timer counts down the rest your coach set for that exercise.

  • +30s adds 30 seconds. You can tap it more than once.
  • Tap here to skip rest (or tap outside the timer) ends it early.
  • With 10 seconds left it vibrates and turns orange. At zero it chimes, vibrates and shows GO! Tap TAP TO START SET when you’re ready.
  • The timer keeps the right time if you lock your phone or switch apps.

If your coach didn’t set a rest for an exercise, no timer appears. There’s also no timer after the last set of the workout. Exercises you add yourself get 90 seconds.

Can I add an exercise that isn't in my workout? #

  • Athlete

Yes. Tap Add exercise below the exercise card. Search by name, or pick from Starred (your coach’s go-to exercises), Recent or All. Use Filters to narrow by equipment or muscle group. Then tap Add to session.

  • The new exercise becomes your current exercise straight away. When you’ve done its sets, the tracker takes you back to the first exercise you haven’t finished.
  • It gets 90 seconds of rest between sets.
  • The number of sets is a starting point. It’s based on what you did last time: 2 to 5 sets, or 2 if you’ve never done it. Tap Set 1 of 3 to choose more or fewer sets.
  • Adding needs a connection. Offline, you’ll see “You’re offline — connect to add an exercise.”
  • Circuits don’t have an Add exercise button.

Can I do the exercises in a different order, or do extra sets? #

  • Athlete

Yes to both.

A different order. Tap Previous or Up next below the card, or open the exercise list to jump to any exercise. If you leave one half done, it’s shown in orange so you can find it again. When you finish an exercise, the tracker takes you to the first one you haven’t finished.

Extra sets. Keep logging after the last prescribed set. Extra sets are marked Extra, so your coach can tell them apart from the prescription. If you’ve already moved on, the rest timer offers One more set of … to go back.

You can’t swap an exercise for a different one or remove one mid-session. Add the replacement and skip the original instead. Exercises you don’t log just count as not done.

Why are weights in pounds when I want kilograms (or the other way round)? #

  • Athlete
  • Coach

The Session Tracker always uses the team’s weight unit, so the whole team lifts in the same unit. Athletes can’t choose a different unit for themselves.

Coaches: open Team Settings → General Settings, and under Unit Preferences set Weight to Pounds or Kilograms. Athletes see the change the next time they open Today’s Workout.

How does the Session Tracker use and update my 1RM? #

  • Athlete
  • Coach

Using your 1RM. When your coach prescribes a weight as a percentage of your one-rep max, the Session Tracker works out the weight for you and shows how (“75% of your 200 lbs 1RM”). Weights are rounded to plates and dumbbells your team can actually load.

  • No 1RM on file yet: it says “First session — enter any working weight”.
  • 1RM more than six weeks old: it reminds you that the weight may need adjusting.

Updating your 1RM. When your sets suggest you’re stronger than your 1RM on file, a card appears after the exercise:

  • UPDATE saves the new estimate, and any later %1RM sets in this session are recalculated.
  • KEEP leaves your 1RM unchanged.
  • If you don’t answer, the update is accepted when you finish the session.

The estimate comes from your best set of 12 reps or fewer. Tap My 1RMs on Today’s Workout to see every 1RM, whether it was Estimated from session or a Manual entry, and to enter one yourself with Update manually.

How do I finish a session, and what's the RPE and feel? #

  • Athlete

Tap Finish at the top of the screen. You’ll see how many exercises you completed. Tap Finish & see results, or Keep going if you’re not done.

The results screen shows your Total Volume, training load (TLS pts), time and any wins: a new 1RM, a best set, a volume record or your streak.

Rate the session

Under How did it feel?:

  • Effort (RPE 0–10): how hard the session was overall, from 0 (rest) to 10 (all out).
  • Overall feel: from Awful to Great.

Both are optional. Tap Done to save them. If you leave the screen another way, the ratings aren’t saved. Your coach sees them alongside the workout in Smagpie.

I finished but forgot to log a set. Can I add it? #

  • Athlete

Yes. On the results screen tap Continue session. Later, you can open View history on Today’s Workout and tap Continue on the session. Log the missing set, then tap Finish again. Your coach sees the updated session.

What happens if I forget to tap Finish? #

  • Athlete
  • Coach

If a session is still open after you’ve been inactive for 4 hours, and it’s past 2 am where you are, Smagpie closes it for you:

  • If you logged sets, the session is saved as finished on the day you trained, so your streak still counts. It shows an Auto-saved badge in Session History.
  • Your coach sees it in Smagpie like any other finished workout, with every set you logged. It’s marked Auto-saved and has no effort or feel ratings, because you never reached the rating screen. Your coach isn’t sent a notification for it.
  • If you didn’t log anything, the empty session is removed.

It’s still best to tap Finish yourself when you’re done. That’s when you see your results and can rate the session. If you open an auto-saved session with Continue and finish it again, the same workout is updated.

Does the Session Tracker work without signal in the gym? #

  • Athlete

Mostly. Every set you save is stored on your phone first, then sent to Smagpie. If the signal drops, you’ll see “You’re offline — your session will sync when you reconnect.” Keep logging as normal. When the connection comes back, you’ll see “Back online — syncing session.”

Some steps do need a connection:

  • starting a session
  • adding an exercise
  • discarding a session
  • finishing a session

Start the session while you still have signal. If you tap Finish without a connection, you’ll see “You’re offline — connect to finish this session.” Your sets stay on your phone, so move somewhere with signal and tap Finish again. If finishing fails for another reason, you’ll see “Couldn’t finish the session. Please try again.” Your sets aren’t sent to your coach until the session is finished.

Sets still waiting to be sent go out as soon as you’re back online, wherever you are in the app. If you were offline so long that the session was auto-saved in the meantime, those late sets can’t be added to it. You’ll see “Some sets couldn’t be saved because that session was already finished.”

Can I switch phones mid-session, or run two sessions at once? #

  • Athlete

You can have one session in progress at a time. If you try to start another, the Session Tracker offers to resume the one that’s open.

  • Assigned workouts, and team workouts you picked: you can continue on another phone or tablet. Log in there and tap Resume Session. The sets you’ve logged come with you, and you pick up at the first exercise you haven’t finished.
  • Build-as-you-go sessions stay on the device that started them. On another device you’ll be asked to finish there first, or to discard the other session.
  • Set targets you changed don’t follow you to another device. Exercises you added get a fresh target and 90 seconds of rest there.

Reloading the page or reopening the app on the same phone brings you back to the exact exercise you were on.

Where do I see what my athlete lifted? #

  • Coach

Open the completed workout from the athlete’s schedule, or from view workout details on the workout in your team schedule. For a session logged in the Session Tracker you’ll see:

  • each exercise with its sets, prescribed against actual for assigned workouts (and Extra sets marked)
  • a Summary of volume, sets and duration
  • 1RM Highlights when the athlete set a new 1RM
  • their training load (TLS), and the Effort (RPE) and How I Felt ratings they gave

Sessions the athlete started without an assigned workout appear as their own completions. You also get a notification shortly after an athlete finishes a workout you assigned.

If the athlete forgot to tap Finish, Smagpie finishes the session overnight. The workout still shows on their schedule, and its details show every set, marked Auto-saved and without ratings. No notification is sent. See What happens if I forget to tap Finish?

How strength training load is worked out

Smagpie scores each set from how heavy it was against the athlete’s 1RM, the number of reps, and the kind of exercise. Big compound lifts count for more than isolation work. Bodyweight and timed exercises are scored too, and no single set can dominate the total. If you gave the workout its own training load, Smagpie uses yours.
